Path of Exile 2's 0.5 "Return of the Ancients" update does a lot more than add another league mechanic. It also changes how gearing and crafting feel in the long run, mainly through the new Runes of Aldur system and Aldur's Legacy crafting. Instead of relying completely on random drops, players now have much more control over building items around specific playstyles and upgrading gear step by step as their character grows stronger POE 2 Orbs.
The core idea behind Aldur's Legacy is pretty simple: start with a strong unique base, add the right rune modifiers, and slowly turn that item into something much stronger than a normal rare piece. Because the system focuses heavily on synergy, certain unique bases stand out immediately in 0.5. Weapons and armor with strong implicit stats or flexible scaling tend to work best since they leave more room for rune upgrades later on.
Weapons are where a lot of players will probably notice the system first. Unique bows are especially popular right now because projectile builds are very strong in 0.5. A bow with built-in projectile speed or extra arrows becomes much more valuable once you start adding runes that boost crit chance, elemental scaling, or on-hit effects. Builds like Oil Barrage and other projectile-heavy setups benefit a lot from this because the runes naturally reinforce what the weapon already does well.
Staves are another big winner in the current patch, especially for spell and damage-over-time builds. Chaos setups, Twister builds, and caster-focused Spirit Walkers all scale nicely with rune combinations that improve DoT multipliers, elemental scaling, or Runic Ward interactions. The nice thing is that the system does not force every crafted item into pure offense either. Many players are mixing defensive runes directly into their weapons to create safer endgame setups without sacrificing too much damage.
Armor crafting feels just as important in 0.5 because of how Runic Ward works. Unique chest pieces, helms, and shields that already provide decent life, evasion, or armor scaling become much stronger once you add ward-focused runes on top. Some rune combinations add extra mitigation while your ward is active, while others help restore ward faster after taking hits. That makes defensive gearing feel much more layered compared to older crafting systems where players often stacked only raw life and resistances.
One of the biggest improvements in this update is that low-level unique bases are no longer automatically useless later in the game. Since you can upgrade many of these items through the Aldur system, a unique you find during the campaign can potentially stay relevant all the way into maps and endgame bosses. That gives the crafting process a much more personal feel because players are improving gear they actually used instead of replacing everything every few acts.
The rune system itself also encourages more experimentation than previous leagues. Instead of farming random currency endlessly, players can target specific rune rewards through Ezomyte Remnants and related encounters. The modifiers you choose for enemies directly affect the types of runes and crafting materials they drop, so there is a real sense of planning involved. If your build needs projectile scaling, ward bonuses, or elemental support, you can actively farm toward those goals instead of waiting for lucky drops.
A lot of the best Aldur's Legacy setups in 0.5 come from combining rune "packages" instead of focusing on single stats. Offensive builds might stack flat damage, crit scaling, and debuff effects together, while defensive builds focus on ward recovery, mitigation, and sustain. Hybrid setups are becoming especially popular because some runes reward players for maintaining full ward while also boosting damage output at the same time.
The Runes of Aldur system gives PoE 2 crafting a much more hands-on feel. Instead of just hoping to loot the perfect item, players are gradually shaping gear around their own builds and playstyles. Whether you want a projectile-focused bow build, a tanky Runic Ward setup, or a chaos-based caster, Aldur's Legacy gives you enough flexibility to slowly build toward that fantasy piece by piece.
